1942 solo circumnavigation by Argentinean Vito Dumas starting and finishing in Buenos Aires. Twelve and a half month voyage via the three great capes in the roaring forties. Vito was the first to complete the 20,420 nm high latitude voyage single handed and the first solo sailor to round Cape Horn. (Joshua Slocum rounded South America in his 1895 circumnavigation; however, it was via the Straits of Magellan which is more protected and considerably north of Tierra del Fuego.) Vito made 3 landfalls during his journey.

On our way we cross the Antarctic Converge Zone again, leave the Southern Ocean behind us and start sailing the South Atlantic. We will sail through the furious fifties to the roaring forties, where the winds usually blow continuously. This keeps the watches active, helping the permanent crew steering the ship, taking away and furling the sails.
He stood on the deck of his boat for the rest of Christmas Day, through the high-latitude austral summer night, and all the next day, the wind never dropping below gale force. Adrift in the Southern Ocean at almost fifty degrees latitude, twelve hundred miles south of Australia, closer to Antarctica, he was as alone and exposed as any human on earth could possibly be.
